Understanding the Debate Over Authority Sites versus Mini Sites



Each model, authority sites and minisites, attract internet marketers because each has its own appeal. One thing to keep in mind is search engines naturally want to give their users good content. With that said, we do realize that an online marketer will choose the model they think will be in their best interests. The time savings enjoyed by only building minisites may be lost in the backend with promoting them - it all depends. Although you can more successfully do that with an authority site. But yes, you can still find ways to make good money by only using minisites.

Some marketers are more interested in working with a very small and specific niche. This can be a great choice for many marketers. Sometimes you're only interested in that very thin slice of the market known as a micro-niche. It is in these segments of marketers that mini sites dominate and thrive. With the latter, you can target just one or two main keyword phrases very easily and often rank very well in a short time. Assuming of course that the competition for these two keywords isn't too fierce. In all honesty, you can also target micro-niches inside authority sites too. But if you have no interest to do so, then the mini site is the best choice.

This decision can be explored from many angles. It is possible to have ten mini sites along with one rather large authority site. What would it take to drive traffic to each of these sites? Each of the ten mini sites will need you to drive traffic to them individually. The larger authority site will also require time and attention for driving traffic. However, even though you are targeting different pages within the same site, it is still within one website. If you're interested in leveraging your time, authority sites will work better. Plus you benefit from the inherent "stickiness" value with the larger site. A mini site has nothing to make it sticky because it is so small and with limited content.

Authority sites can give you the benefit of ranking for keywords and phrases you might not have expected.
